Some market-relevant PFAS with properties of concern are regulated by the European Chemicals Regulation REACH, the CLP (Classification, Labeling and Packaging Regulation) or the Stockholm Convention for POPs (persistent organic pollutants).
The EU intends to tighten these existing regulations in the near future.
PFAS is an abbreviation for per- and polyfluorinated chemicals. According to the latest estimates, this group of substances comprises more than 10,000 different substances. PFAS do not occur naturally and have only been produced and used since the late 1940s. Chemically speaking, the organic compounds consist of carbon chains of different lengths in which the hydrogen atoms are completely (perfluorinated) or partially (polyfluorinated) replaced by fluorine atoms.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, trade name Teflon) is used as a powder or dispersion to reduce friction and wear in plain bearings. It is also used as a lubricant additive in many conventional lubricants. PTFE significantly improves the lubricating properties in boundary and mixed friction conditions, it reduces frictional resistance, has noise and vibration damping properties and reduces the so-called stick-slip effect. The dirt-repellent effect of PTFE in lubricants is controversial. Overall, it is a very effective additive. There are also plain bearings that consist only of PTFE.
If PFAS enter your body through food, they can bind to proteins in the blood, liver or kidneys and accumulate in the body. Long-chain compounds, i.e. larger molecules, such as PFOA, PFOS or PFNA remain in the body longer than short-chain representatives such as PFHxS. The consequences of this were shown in a long-term study that ran for seven years.
In this study, scientists examined children and adolescents throughout Europe for their exposure to various chemicals, including PFAS. The concentrations found exceeded the critical weekly dose suggested by the EFSA by a factor of a thousand. The compounds PFOS and PFOA had accumulated to a high degree in the blood of the study participants.
Today, science is already aware of some very serious consequences that can result from long-term exposure to PFAS. For example, it is known that the presence of PFAS in the body can lead to the immune response to vaccinations not functioning properly in young children, preventing them from developing sufficient immunity against diseases.
In addition to the effect on the immune system, influences on the
have been observed. A connection with testicular and kidney cancer is also being discussed in research. PFAS are also suspected of influencing the hormones of the thyroid gland and could promote Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.
We can already offer some alternatives that do not contain PTFE. We are also developing new materials to replace PTFE. To date, however, a decrease in performance is to be expected.
In the past, lead was used to improve the metallic running properties. deva.metal® materials were and still are partly produced with the addition of lead powder. New alloys are now being produced without lead. Lead is considered harmful to health. Furthermore, it causes a grain change in deva.metal®. Read here.
For an optimal maintenance-free sliding bearing system, the bearing pairing and the associated corrosion requirements are of high importance.
The dry-working sliding parts do not bind dirt and are therefore less sensitive to contamination than normally lubricated sliding parts.
Yes, repair of dg plugs in deva.glide is possible.
In the case of bearings with press-fit, the actual inner diameter of the bearing is only determined after mounting. Thin-walled bearings such as deva.bm® or ...
Everything you need to know about the disposal of our plain bearings.
Cleaning with residue-free, grease-dissolving agents (e.g. Loctite 7063) is permissible. Further information here.
All information on how and where to best store Deva bearings.
The definition of a worn bearing depends on the type of plain bearing and the requirements from the application.
If the base and mating body are made of the same material, this is referred to as an inherent pairing. Such friction pairings ...
The surface pressure results from the normal force divided by the projected contact area.
The normal force acts at right angles to the friction surfaces and is part of Coulomb's law of friction.
The friction or the coefficient of friction μ depends on the normal force. In polar friction pairings, the adhesive portion of the coefficient of friction is very high due to the attraction of the friction surface at low normal force.
The counter body or counter material is very often steel. In most sliding pairings, the counter body must not wear out.
The sliding partners are completely separated from each other by a liquid lubricating film.
Lubrication state in which partial solid friction exists alongside hydrodynamic lubrication.
Achieved by solid lubricants when insufficient lubrication occurs with grease or oil lubricants.
Occurs when the separating effect of the lubricant or transfer film (third body) is insufficient, as the initial friction is higher than the movement friction.
The transfer film, also known as the third body, forms during operation as a surface layer, in particular on the counter body but also on the base body.
A tribological system essentially consists of a base body (sample) and a counter body (counter workpiece) sliding on it.
Because of their crystalline structure, solid lubricants are used when liquid (lubricating oil) or semi-solid lubricants (grease) fail.
Maintenance-free plain bearings ensure independent lubrication, so that relubrication by hand is no longer necessary.
Dry lubrication improves the sliding properties of plain bearings, sealing elements and other machine elements.
The purpose of a bearing is to minimize friction as well as ensure wear-free and precise guidance of machine parts.
Properly functioning lubrication places many demands on the design and the care of the user. Lubrication is often indispensable.
